In the project, we bring together expertise from the University of California in San Diego in large-scale immersive visualization and from Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen Nuremberg in high-quality volume visualization algorithms. New “cinematic” rendering techniques for medical volumetric data, as obtained from CT or MR scanners, make it possible to visualize internal structures of the human body in unprecedented quality. While first such visualizations required long computation times, latest advances bring the technique also to the real-time domain. UCSD and FAU will explore novel temporal and spatial filtering techniques based on deep neural networks, with the goal to realize cinematic volume visualization on the large-scale virtual reality environments at UCSD.
Final report:
Due to the Corona pandemic it was not possible to start the project as planned. Furthermore, the academic partner at UCSD (Prof. Jürgen Schulze) left academia in 2021 and we did not find an appropriate alternative, so the project could not be started.
