Healthcare systems in Europe and the US will face a challenge of balancing patient needs with limited resources due to aging populations, especially in rural areas. New technologies, including LLMs, offer potential solutions by improving access to palliative care knowledge for healthcare providers, patients, and caregivers. The collaboration between FAU and Stanford School will (1) assess healthcare professionals’ needs in Germany and California regarding LLM in Palliative and End-of-Life Care while considering cultural and ethical differences, (2) evaluate LLM advice on clinical scenarios for validity and applicability, and (3) test a conversational avatar for provider training. The long-term goal is to create a culturally sensitive, globally accessible smart advisor to improve palliative care, particularly in underserved areas.
